Superlative Form

The superlative form is used to compare more than two things or people.
There are two types of superlative forms:  superiority and inferiority.

1) SUPERIORITY

    With short adjectives and adverbs (the + adjective / adverb + -est + of / in)
  • John is the smartest in his class.
  • Jim ran the fastest of all.

    With longer adjectives and adverbs (the most + adjective / adverb  + of / in)
  • It is the most expensive dress in the shop.
  • Mary sings the most happily of all the girls in the group.

    With singolar and plural nouns (the most + noun + of / in)
  • The company has made the most profit.
  • This is the library which has the most foreign books in town.
 
    With verbs (verb + the most + of / in)
  • Paul eats the most in my family.


2) INFERIORITY

    With adjectives and advebs (the least + adjective / adverb + of / in)
  • Mary is the least optimistic of Jane's friends.

    With singolar nouns (the least + sing. noun + of / in)
  • I try to spend the least time possible in the kitchen.

    With plural nouns (the fewest + pl. noun + of / in)
  • Bill made the fewest mistakes of all class.

    With verbs (verb + the least + of / in)
  • He earns the least of all.
