Difference between "sorrow" and "sadness"

Sorrow
"Sorrow" is deep distress, sadness for the loss of someone.
  • I felt sorrow at/over the death of my friend.

Sadness
"Sadness" is a more general sentiment with a less precise definition.
  • Erika felt sadness at leaving the flat where she had so many happy memories.
