Modal verbs: use of Must

- To say that you believe something is certain.
   [ must +  infinitive (without to) ]
   [ must + have + past participle ]
  • You've been travelling all day. You must be tired. 
  • You must be worried that she is so late coming home.
  • I didn't hear the phone. I must have been asleep.
  • I've lost one of my gloves. You must have dropped it somewhere.

- To say that you think something is essential or necessary.
   [ must +  infinitive (without to) ]
  • I must buy flowers for my mother. Tomorrow is her birthday
  • I must stop smoking.
