Difference between "throw", "toss", "chuck" and "hurl"

Throw
"Throw" means to send something from your hand through the air by moving your hand or arm quickly.
  • We threw our hats in the air at the end of the ceremony.

Toss
"Toss" means to throw something with a quick, light motion.
  • She tossed the paper into the recycling bin.

Chuck
"Chuck" means to throw something carelessly.
  • Someone has chucked a butt at me.

Hurl
"Hurl" means to throw something violently.
  • He hurled a rock through the window.
