Subordinate Clauses: Place Clause

The "place clause" is used to define where the action described in the main clause took place.

The place conjunctions are:
  • where
  • wherever
  • everywhere
  • anywhere
Note: The subordinators "wherever", "everywhere", and "anywhere" are similar in meaning and are interchangeable. You can begin a sentence with these conjunctions, but usually not with "where".

Examples:
  • Most people shop where they get the lowest prices.
  • Wherever she goes, there are crowds of people waiting to see her.
  • Everywhere we went, people were friendly.
  • They gave her permission to go anywhere she wanted to.
