Subordinate Clauses: Adversative Clause

The "adversative clause" expresses an event or situation that is opposite to what of the main clause.

The adversative conjunctions are:
  • while
  • whereas

Examples:
  • I am quiet and shy, while/whereas my sister is lively and talkative.
  • While/Whereas my father is strong and tall, I am short and weak.

Some observations:
  1. "While" and "whereas" have the same meaning and are interchangeable.
  2. We use a comma between the two clauses and no matter which order they are in.
