Modal verbs: use of Would

"Would" is most commonly used to create conditional verb forms. It also used to indicate actions that are repeated in the past and also as the past form of the modal verb "will."

- To talk about actions that are repeated in the past.
   [ would + infinitive without to ] 
  •    Lianne’s mum would read her bedtime stories when she was a child. 

- To express an action hard to realize in the present (2nd Conditional).
   [ would + infinitive without to ]
  •     If I had a map I would lend it to you. 

- To express an action impossible in the past (3rd Conditional).
   [ would + have + past participle ]
  •    If I had known that you were coming I would have met you at the station. 

- To indicate a future intention decided in the past.
   [would + infinitive without to]
  •    The forecast said it would snow the next day.
